The Garrett Family

Garrett Camp, 1932-1946

The story of Prairie Hollow Camp begins in the early 1930s, just after the creation of the Lake of the Ozarks. In 1931, the Bagnell Dam was completed, resulting in the flooding of the Osage River valley and the formation of the lake. Recognizing the potential for recreational opportunities, Russell Garrett established Garrett’s Camp in 1932.

This fishing camp quickly became a favorite among fishing enthusiasts. Its prime location and excellent facilities attracted visitors from all over, eager to enjoy the scenic beauty and bountiful fishing of the Lake of the Ozarks. The camp featured rustic cabins, boat rentals, and guided fishing tours, providing everything needed for a memorable outdoor experience. In 1946, the Garrett’s renamed the camp Prairie Hollow Camp to reflect its location at the mouth of Prairie Hollow.

By the 1960s, the camp had established a country store, catering to the needs of visitors for supplies and snacks. The store provided essentials for camping, fishing, and boating excursions, further enhancing the camp’s appeal.

Throughout its history, Prairie Hollow Camp has remained under the stewardship of the Hufferd family. Each generation has upheld the values of hospitality, community, and a love for the Lake of the Ozarks that Gene and Laura Hufferd instilled. The family’s dedication to preserving the natural beauty of the area while providing top-notch recreational facilities has ensured that Prairie Hollow Camp remains a cherished staple for generations of visitors. Today, Prairie Hollow Camp operates as a multifaceted marina and camp, offering a blend of past traditions and modern conveniences. The vintage décor of the store calls back to a bygone era, while the updated gas dock can fuel watercraft of all types.
